Seattle Art Museum (SAM)

The Seattle Art Museum is situated in Downtown Seattle, Washington. SAM was established by Richard. E. Fuller and his mother, Margaret Mac Tavish Fuller on June 23, 1933. The Art Institute of Seattle managed the art activities of SAM when it first opened in the Art Deco building in Volunteer Park.
Initially, the collections at the museum were from the Art Institute and were housed in the famous Henry House. It was in 1991 that these collections were brought to the current location of the museum. The present building of the Museum was built by Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. An important landmark located directly in front of the Museum is a 1994 sculpture popularly known as the ‘Hammering Man’.
SAM is not only renovating the Venturi building but has also taken up the first 4 floors of the 16-floor building designed by Brad Cloepfil of Portland, Oregon.
The new expanded building now offers about 70% of gallery space, a new elegant restaurant, and an expanded museum store. More than a thousand new pieces worth a billion dollars have been recently added to the museum’s collection. The Olympic Sculpture Park that opened on January 20, 2007 on the Seattle Waterfront is also owned by the Seattle Art Museum. Admission to the Museum is free on the first Thursday of every month.
