The Trail of Vines is one of the two components of the Tropical Asia Exhibit Zone at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, the other being the Elephant Forest. It is well known for its different Southeast Asian rainforest habitats like the Western Ghats of India and the rocky outcrop in Malaysia. Here, you can observe several endangered species like Malayan tapirs, lion-tailed macaque monkeys, Siamangs apes, lion-tailed macaques, and Indian pythons.
The Trail of Vines exhibit has won four national Exhibit Awards in the last 7 years. It was awarded the Significant Achievement Award recently by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA). It encompasses an area of 2.7 acres (0.01 sq-km) and is home to more than 10,000 plants from 266 species.
This Exhibit also houses large indoor/outdoor habitats for the orangutans. The major attraction is the Northern Borneo orangutan forest. Here, the visitors can watch the arboreal apes living and sleeping in treetops, and swinging on vines, without any bars or mesh between the orangutans and visitors.
