The University District, popularly known as the U. District, is situated in Seattle, Washington. It is named after the University of Washington, the main campus of which is located in the District. The University District is bounded by Interstate 5 on the west; 25th Avenue NE on the east; Lake Washington Ship Canal on the south; and by NE Ravenna Boulevard on the north. University Way NE, the main commercial street, is popularly known as "The Ave" in the "U. District". It was in 1885 that the U. District was first surveyed. The first white settlers arrived here about 12 years later.
The U District is well known for its local ‘U District Street Fair’ held in May every year. The District is also famous for the ASUW Experimental College, the largest nonprofit student-run program. This college is open to all and has made a significant contribution to the cultural ambience of the U District in the past.
Other major landmarks that characterize the neighborhood include the Blue Moon Tavern-the unofficial cultural landmark; Big Time-Seattle’s original brewpub; and Scarecrow Video-the largest video store on the west coast. Neptune, Varsity, and the Grand Illusion Cinema are among the 6 theatres located in the U District. Safeco Plaza, Meany Hotel, and the Neo-classical Carnegie Library are some other major attractions in the city.
