University Way NortheastUniversity Way Northeast, popularly known as “The Ave”, is situated in the University District in northeast Seattle. The Ave is not only the off-campus extension of the University of Washington but is also the commercial hub of the U. District. At present, it resembles an eight-block-long global food court. It is supported and utilized by the largely white and middle class residents of the U. District; by the faculty, staff, and more than 96,000 students of the UW; and by the youth population of transient or homeless individuals. Thus, the University Way Northeast is more or less a crossroad of diverse subcultures. The Ave runs from below Northeast Pacific Street in the south to the Cowen Park and Northeast Ravenna Boulevard in the north. The street was initially named as the 14th Avenue but was later renamed as the ‘University Way’ in 1919 by the University Commercial Club. The Street has gradually become the heart of campus life for university students. There are a number of inexpensive restaurants, new and used book stores, movie theatres, and clothing stores along the University Way, especially between Northeast 41st and Northeast 50th streets. Varsity movie theatre and the University Book Store are the two important landmarks here. Besides, there are several salon-style establishments and six elegant coffeehouses on The Ave or its alleys. However, this street is now inundated with many problems of the urban neighborhoods as well as with the social and economic problems of American cities. The University Way Northeast is also known to be the major hangout for the homeless and the transient young adults and teens in Seattle. This homeless population is often referred to as the “Ave Rats”. Most of these young people are involved in buying and selling drugs and are serious victims of abuse and addiction to narcotics. However, their number has declined significantly in the past few years. |
