The Washington Park Arboretum is a beautiful public park located in Seattle, Washington. It is a joint project of the City of Seattle's Department of Parks and Recreation, University of Washington, and the non-profit Arboretum Foundation. However, it is operated and maintained primarily by the University of Washington. This park encompasses an area of about 200 acres (0.81 sq-km) and is situated on the shore of Lake Washington.
The beautiful Park Arboretum is well known for its spectacular vegetation. It is home to more than 40,000 trees, shrubs and vines. Over 10,000 species are catalogued in Arboretum’s collections. About 95% of these collections are displayed. In this collection, over 4,600 different species are cultivated varieties collected from around the world. About 750 of the taxa are wild species and over 139 plants are on the endangered species list.
The Park Arboretum also houses the popular Japanese Garden with its traditional ‘Tea House’. Besides, the park includes a large playfield. Moreover, the entire length of the spectacular Arboretum Creek is located within the Park. Lake Washington Boulevard E. runs just parallel to this Creek. The Park is bordered by Mont Lake and Madison valley to the west, Washington park neighborhood to the south, Union Bay to the north, and the Broad moor Golf Club to the east.
Another major tourist attraction in the Park is the Joseph Witt Winter Garden, located just south of the Graham Visitors Center. This Winter Garden is one of the few cold-weather delights in the Northwest. It remains sun-drenched on clear days and is certainly worth a visit. The plant list is made available at the GVC Lobby.
In the winter, the beauty of the Park is enhanced by the red twig dogwoods, delicate white and yellow flowers on witch hazels, bright berries on deciduous and evergreen hollies, and frosty green foliage on vines and groundcovers. Also, waterfowl and Gadwalls feed in the Park. The Park has a lot to offer. You can either choose to have a picnic out on the lush grass or rent a canoe at the University Boat House.
