Woodland Park Zoo

The Woodland Park Zoo is located on the Woodland Park estate that was originally owned by Guy C. Phinney, a real estate developer and a lumber mill owner in Seattle. The Zoo encompasses an area of nearly 188 acres (0.76 sq-km) and covers almost the entire western half of the Woodland Park, situated near the spectacular Greenland Lake. It was established in the year 1899.

At present, the zoo includes 65 acres (263,000 m²) of public spaces and exhibits. Its collection comprises of 1,144 animal specimens, 290 animal species, 22 arthropod colonies, 7,000 trees, more than 50,000 shrubs and herbs, and over 1,000 different plant species. Besides, it also houses a ‘gorilla habitat’, the world’s first immersion exhibit. The Zoo is in fact a pioneer in the field of immersion exhibits and has won many Best National Exhibit awards from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. 

The major attraction at the Woodland Park Zoo is the ‘Zoomazium’. It is an interactive play-space for children and was opened in May, 2006. It has a large open area for interactive sessions, a number of nature-themed play-spaces, a full-scale roof garden of native plants, and a Nature Exchange desk.

Other impressive exhibits at the Zoo include ‘Chrysalises’, a Butterflies and Bloom Exhibit; Tropical Rain Forest exhibit that comprises of a myriad of animals from Central and South America, wide variety of tropical birds, and several African rain forest species; Tropical Asia Exhibit that consists of the famous Elephant Forest and the Trail of Vines; Northern Trail with Northern habitats like Tundra and Taiga and a wide variety of North American animal species; African Savanna that reflects the African culture; Australasia; and the temperate Forest Exhibit.

Other main highlights at the Zoo are a Raptor center, lowland anoa, Sumatran Tigers, Japanese Serows, hornbills, snow leopards, Bug World, ‘Family Farm’ exhibit, and the popular hand-carved Carousel. The Woodland Park Zoo has a lot to offer. It is the best place where you can enjoy, learn, and come close to Nature.
