History of Wisconsin

  empire state building

Wisconsin, situated near the midpoint of the North American continent, was first explored by the French Jean Nicollet in 1634. The territory was ceded to Britain in 1763. After the Revolution of 1783, the Wisconsin territory was acquired by the United States. However, the territory continued to be under the British administration until the war of 1812. The Wisconsin Territory, including portions of the current states, was finally established on July 3, 1836. ‘The State of Wisconsin was given its current name by Wisconsin’s territorial legislature in 1845. The word ‘Wisconsin’ has been derived from the ancient Ojibwe word, ‘Miskwasiniing’, meaning “Red Stone Place”.

The constitution of the Wisconsin Territory was endorsed on March 13, 1848. On May 29, 1848, Wisconsin was ultimately added to the Union as the 30th U.S. State. This state has always been ethnically heterogeneous since its founding. The people who first moved into the region belonged mainly to New York and New England. They were followed by a large number of Europeans, including Germans. Scandinavians and smaller groups of Dutch, Finns, Poles, Irish, and Belgians migrated to this region between 1850 and 1900. Larger numbers of African American and Mexican immigrants settled in the area in the 20th century. A new influx of Hmongs came to the region after the end of the Vietnam War.

The economy of Wisconsin was formerly dependent on mining, farming, and lumbering. In the late 19th century, large-scale industrialization instigated in the southeastern section of Wisconsin, with the city of Milwaukee as the major commercial center. Tourism became of the most significant industries in the state in the 20th century. Service industries, such as education and medicine, have become dominant in the state during the past few decades. Wisconsin’s picturesque landscape, which has been shaped by the Wisconsin glaciation, attracts millions of visitors to this beautiful state every year. Over the years, the State of Wisconsin has emerged as a perfect tourist destination in the United States and is truly worthwhile.
