Managed by the University of Wyoming – Laramie, American Heritage Center is its renowned research wing that holds over 50,000 rare books, maps, photographs and several manuscripts highlighting the geographical, cultural, political, economical, environmental and social history of the nation. Apart from preserving the valuable archives, the Center has under its possession papers of several well-known individuals including prominent authors, eminent statesmen, artists, and journalists.
The American Heritage Center traces its origin to the efforts of Grace Raymond Hebard, a faculty member and librarian at the University of Wyoming who took the initiative of collecting papers of pioneers from Wyoming in a wide range of fields. Her effort dates back to more than 100 years in the past, but has emerged as the foundation for the establishment and growth of the present day American Heritage Center.
Today, researchers from across the world use the extensive resources provided by the Center for both study and instruction. Most outstanding among its historical resources are the collections on the State of Wyoming, American West, the industries of petroleum and mining, environmental conservation history and in-depth information on the American culture in 20th century. Tourists are also attracted to the stunning centennial complex built at an estimated cost of USD 19 million that hosts American Heritage Center along with the Univeristy of Wyoming Art Museum.
The variety of educative programs such as lectures, symposiums and concerts to promote American history, heritage and culture are educative and therefore greatly appreciated.
