Buffalo Bill Historical Center

old stagecoach at buffalo bill historical center

The vibrant city of Cody, Wyoming has the world renowned Buffalo Bill Historical Center, a single institution that houses 5 unique museums of immense historical importance and a prized library. Additionally, the events calendar at this center is full of cultural, musical and artistic treats for one and all.

Located right across the East Gate entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Buffalo Bill Historical Center was initially established as the Buffalo Bill Memorial Association, in the year 1917. The five museums, The Buffalo Bill Museum, The Whitney Gallery of Western Art, The Plains Indian Museum, The Cody Firearms Museum and The Draper Museum of Natural History; all showcase exceptional exhibits within their individual scope.

The Buffalo Bill Museum stands out from the rest as it highlights the life and times of one revolutionary individual called W.F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917) who became famous with his live shows full of stunning acts, magnificent landscape of cowboys and trick shooters. The impact created by him in the absence of visual medium is indeed exemplary and this museum highlights all aspects of his professional and personal life. The Whitney Gallery of Western Art has a comprehensive collection of masterworks pertaining to the American West. Artifacts including some excellent paintings and sculptures from the early 19th century to the current date are presented here. The third museum is The Plains Indian Museum, is arguably the largest collection of Plains Indian art in the entire nation. Fine exhibits display the skills and history pertaining to the ancient tribes such as Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne, Sioux, Shoshone and Pawnee.

A truly different kind of gallery, The Cody Firearms Museum, has an unbelievable collection of firearms from Europe and America, some of them as ancient as 16th Century. The final section of the visit would take you to the Draper Museum of Natural History that aims to interpret the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The intermountain basins that lie close by are also studied here.

Complete this educative tour by stopping at the Harold McCracken Research Library, which has its focus on study of the American West and an enviable set of resources towards this end.
