Devil's Tower National Monument

devil's tower national monument

Devil's Tower National Monument is a massive and imposing vertical tower that rises over 1265 feet above ground level and is located on the banks of Belle Fourche River in Crook County, Wyoming.

Archaeologists have concluded that this massive monolith made of magna is a remnant of primeval volcanic activity. The columns like marks on the tower are attributed to several thousand years of erosion. However for thousands of American Indians who refer to the Devil’s Tower as the Bears Lodge or Bear’s Tippi, this formation is sacred and the site is used for religious ceremonies. Several interesting Indian folklores are also attached to the formation of the Tower.

Declared as a National Monument in the year 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, Devil's Tower is the first site to be awarded this accreditation. The National Monument area is spread over 1300 acres (530 hectares) and visitors enjoy the pine carpeted terrains and the greenery flourishing in the valley. Sedimentary rocks occupy a major part of the landscape that encircles the Devil’s Tower. Many wildlife species such as deer and prairie dogs are abundant in this region.

Seasoned hikers are allowed to climb the Devil’s tower and it is estimated that annually 1% of the total visitors undertake this exercise. Considered to be one of the toughest climbing experiences in the world, registration with the Park Ranger is a must. Some world class golf courses and recreation resorts are found in the region that is an added attraction.
