The Fort Caspar Museum is one of the key monuments depicting the history of Wyoming. Originally built in 1859 as a trading outpost, this site was converted into a military post in 1865. Named as the Platte Bridge Station on account of its location on the banks of North Platte River, there was a conspiracy by Native Indian warriors to eliminate this post in 1965. Lieutenant Caspar Collins and his men were attacked by the Indian warriors and he along with several others was killed. In the memory of this valiant lieutenant, the post was renamed as Fort Caspar.
Fort Caspar is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and comprises of both original and reconstructed buildings that were meticulously renovated in the year 1936. The property encompasses officers’ quarters, telegraph hall, stables, smithy shop, and a regional history museum among others.
The wide range of exhibits present in the museum have been acquired, and carefully preserved through all the years since its establishment. A majority of the collection consisting of articles, paintings, photographs and archival content has been set up through donations. The museum has a good collection of wagons and other vehicles from the period between late 19th and early 20th centuries displayed in its Carriage Shed. Â Also, the replicas of Guinard Bridge and Mormon ferry depict the period in 1859 when Mormon pioneers set up a ferry crossing for the North Platte River.
The major attractions here include replicas of Pacific Telegraph Company Office, Infantry Barracks, Mess Hall, Cavalry Barracks, Commissary, Laundry and Quarters of the Lieutenant, Captain and Majors and a memorial cemetery for slain soldiers. In the year 1990 a Centennial Park was added commemorating the Wyoming State Centennial and it is today equipped with picnic shelters , playground for children and a History Walk.
