Considered to be one of the most well recognized locations in the entire American West, Fort Laramie National Historic Site, is located in Fort Laramie, Wyoming.
Spread over an area of about 832 acres, this destination has a deep history linked to its origin and existence. Established in the early 1830’s as a fur trade post, the site was converted into an important military post in 1849 and continued its operation in this capacity until the year 1890. Several battles were waged with the military foreseeing the operations from Fort Laramie Headquarters. Abandoned in 1890, it was only after several decades that a drive to preserve the historic structures within the fort premises was started. This initiative was successfully accomplished when President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced the establishment of Fort Laramie National Monument in 1938, eventually renamed as Fort Laramie National Historic Site in 1960.
Maintained by the National Park Service, there are several interpretive tours to educate visitors about the role played by this fort in the history of Wyoming. Ancient buildings such as Old Bedlam, considered the oldest building in entire Wyoming, are part of Fort Laramie and have been carefully restored to precisely depict the fort’s appearance over a hundred years ago.
