Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National park is one of the colossal canyons located within this famous National Park. Different from the popular Grand Canyon in Arizona, this location has its own grandeur and beauty and is definitely ranked among the stunning canyons of the USA.
Geologists attribute the unique colors of red, pink, orange, yellow and brown and the changing hues to the presence of various iron compounds and hydrothermal variations. Apart from the awe inspiring colors, the definitely attraction is the remarkable shapes and steep curves found on the canyon walls. At times the walls descend sharply to as low as 700 feet and at places they gain more than 1000 feet. The width is anywhere between 1500 feet to 4000 feet, conferring it with a colossal look. Yellowstone River, which passes through the canyon, adds to the attractiveness making the vista just picture perfect.
Rhyolite is the predominant type of rock variety and the current structure of the canyon is believed to be on account of the glacier activity that occurred more than 10,000 years in the past. Additionally the erosion due to water, wind, and earthquakes has sculpted the Grand Canyon giving it the present day majestic appearance.
Apart from the most talked about attractions, there are other subtle aspects that make the trip to Grand Canyon of Yellowstone truly worthwhile. The wildlife in the canyon is a delight for visitors, especially the osprey (fish eagles) that are found in large numbers. Just minutes away from the canyon are lush green stretches of meadows and forests that have numerous lakes and elks roaming around in their natural habitat. Also, several birds and mammal species can be observed.
A wide range of trails are available, with each one offering a different view of the spectacular canyon. Inspiration Point Trail is an attractive and moderately strenuous trail that is closed during winters while the short paved walk of the Grandview Point Trail presents the brightest colors of the canyon. Brink of the Lower Falls and Brink of the Upper Falls are some of the other numerous trails. The grandeur of the location by itself is an attraction, but simple joys offered by nature in its vicinity makes the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National park a thrilling place to visit. |
