Within the Yellowstone National Park, an active geothermal area designated as Mammoth Hot Springs is a major draw on account of its every day altering features. Situated close to the Northern Entrance to Yellowstone, Mammoth Hot Springs has innumerable terraces formed from water rich in minerals. The landscape has limestone deposits spread all round the area and the terraces themselves take various attractive hues such as greens, blues, browns, reds and yellows, orange and pink. Geologists determine the chemical activity by studying these colors.
Mammoth Hot Springs is separated into two segments known as the Lower terrace loop which can be accessed only on foot and the Upper terrace Loop, where vehicles are permitted. During summertime a drive through the Upper Terraces is advisable as there is absolutely no shade in the Lower loop.
Describing the scene at Mammoth Hot springs is not easy. The beautiful colors of the terraces combined with the water springing from the earths crust and flowing in different directions, have to seen to be believed. It is said that the rain water seeps into the earth and gets heated by the magna underneath the ancient Yellowstone volcano. Later rising to the surface, the heated water pours out from the available cracks on the earth’s floor and leaves the limestone deposits that add up to form beautiful ‘sculptures’.
Limestone is the most pre-dominant rock in the entire Mammoth Hot Springs expanse and is an important component of the terraces. The landscape at these terraces is constantly changing and therefore what was an active terrace during your first visit may have been all dried up on your next trip. |
