On the borders of Jackson town in Wyoming, is one of the most exciting destinations in the State for wildlife lovers. Called as the National Elk Refuge, this wildlife sanctuary is spread over an area of 25,000 acres and was established an aim to shelter the largest elk herd in the world. The Refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), which works with allied organizations in the preservation of fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for future generations.
Few decades ago, with the severe winters depriving the elk of food, several of these deer species were found dying. In order to conserve the population of elk and prevent them from starving to death, the first initiative to start a refuge was at the request of citizens of Jackson. The Congress established the National Elk Refuge fund in 1912, laying foundation to an important organization for conservation of wildlife. The National Elk Refuge has now become the perfect winter home for over 7,500 elk and is considered the largest group of elk to be found in one location. The vast spread of land is full of marshes and meadows that are abundant with elk feed and grasses. During winter alfalfa supplements are provided by the sanctuary. Aging between 3 to 10 years, the elk herds can be found from October to April.
Elk are not the only wildlife form found on this location. There are numerous other species including sheep, moose, bighorn, bison, coyotes, mule deer, muskrats, beaver and porcupines. Nearly 200 species of birds have been observed in the Refuge. A destination that has to be visited for its beauty and the sheer number of wildlife forms found in their natural habitat.
