Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Park

wyoming territorial prison

The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Park, located in Laramie – Wyoming, is an archeological site that has become a popular tourist destination.

Listed on the National Historic Register, this artistic building was constructed in the year 1872 and served as a prison home until the year 1903. Historically speaking, increased affluence that followed the construction of Union Pacific Railroad to Laramie City brought with it a steep rise in the crime rate. These developments called for a secure structure to accommodate the erring public. Over 1000 notorious criminals including the infamous Butch Cassidy were housed in the premises of the Territorial Prison during this period.

After Wyoming was declared a State, the prison was converted into an experimental stock farm. It was only 70 years later that the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Park was established and the prison converted into a museum. The restoration carried out in the year 1989, has truly transformed the structure into a captivating sight.

Once inside, visitors are presented with a series of exhibits that talk about the inmates, the law of the land and Western history. Through artistic displays, tourists get a feel of how the prisoners were ‘tamed’ and can closely examine their living conditions. Other attractions that are a part of this 190 acre facility include the Broom Factory, Boxcar and Warden’s House.

With interpretive displays and choice of either self guided tours or a customized tour, the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Park is an exciting place to visit. Also, drop in at the Gift shop to carry some interesting memorabilia.
